Wastewater Spill Island of MAUI

Island: Maui.

CWB has been notified of wastewater spills on the island of Maui. As Maui County started up pump stations in low lying areas, after the tsunami all clear was given, problems occurred. Four pump stations in Wailuku/Kahalui and one in Napili were involved. The facilties in Wailuku/Kahului are: Hawaiian Homes, Waiehu, Wailuku, and A&B pump stations. The Napili pump station is Napili #4.

Public is advised to avoid entering the waters at the following areas due to possible sewage contamination: North Shore from Kuau fronting Mama’s Fish House restaurant to the Waiehu Golf course; South shore from Wailea to Sugar Beach; West Maui from Puamana to Kapalua. Warning signs are being posted and water tests will be conducted.

UPDATE: Site surveys by Maui County indicate that wastewater spills at Hawaiian Homes, Napili #4, and A&B pump stations reached State Waters. Wastewater spills at Waiehu and Wailuku pump stations did not reach State waters and were cleaned up and disinfected by Maui County work crews. County crews continue to clean up and disinfects sites that reached State waters. Public is advised to stay out of affected waters. Warnings signs have been posted and water samples will be collected.
