Possible crack in sewer line, Alenaio Stream Hilo, HAWAII

Reason: Broken Sewer Line.
Island: Hawaii.

CWB was notified by County of Hawaii of a possible cracked sewer line entering a storm drain at the intersection of Ponohawaii and Kilauea Ave. An earlier investigation of an odor complaint, revealed a possible sewage leak from a residential source. The source was secured however, the trickle of discharge continued. Further investigation by the County with the use of a camera in the line showed that there is a possible crack in a nearby County sewer line. As a precaution County of Hawaii officials have posted warning signs along Alenaio Stream leading to Wailoa Pond. The public is advised to stay out of Alenaio Stream until County of Hawaii can patch the leak in the line. Although the leak is very small, in the interest of public health the County of Hawaii will excavate to determine the source,cause of this small leak, and make necessary repairs.

Wastewater discharge at Kewalo Basin peninsula

CWB has been informed of a wastewater discharge from a bathroom on the peninsula of Kewalo Basin. The discharge has entered the harbor via a storm drain and was caused by clogged drains as a result of vandalism. The discharge of an estimated 100-150 gallons has been occuring for at least 7 days. The bathroom has been closed off, and warning signs have been posted within the harbor near the area of discharge. Warning signs have also been posted at the harbor entrance to Point Panic, and will remain posted until bacteria levels return to normal. The public is advised to stay out of these waters.
